Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Subject Guide: Protocols and Methods

Database Tips for Finding Protocols

BIOSIS

When searching BIOSIS, there are two ways to identify protocols:

1.  Literature Type

a. Type your concept or keyword into the first search box (e.g. microarray analysis).

b. Choose 'Literature Type' from the dropdown for the SECOND search box.  Then select 'Protocol' from the new dropdown to the left.

2.  Major Concepts

a. Type your concept or keyword into the first search box.

b. In the second box type "methods and techniques" (in quotes!), then select Major Concept from the dropdown.

PubMed

When searching PubMed, you can add MeSH subheadings to your search to limit somewhat to methods.  Some potentially useful subheadings include the following.  Copy and paste these to the end of your search.

AND methods [sh]

AND analysis [sh]

AND biosynthesis [sh]

AND diagnostic use [sh]

AND instrumentation [sh]

Finding Laboratory Protocols and Methods

This page provides links to a number of the protocol resources we subscribe to in print and online.  When available, there is also a link to searching a specific protocol in PubMed.  Simply add your topic of interest to the search within PubMed to find protocol references on that topic.
