This collection includes various hair care tools that help with the maintenance and health of Black hair. The project supports CoW students, faculty, and staff navigating the challenge of managing their own hair care needs due to the dearth of local haircare professionals experienced in the care and styling of Black hair in Wooster. Over the years, the Multicultural Student Affairs team has filled this gap by arranging shopping trips outside of Wooster for students in need of multicultural hair care products. Because the subject matter of this collection has historical, cultural, and political implications, we intend to maximize the learning opportunities. We are happy to partner with the Africana Studies Department to host a scholar who studies the topic of Black hair for an on-campus talk where they will bring additional context to the collection (date TBA). Also, student leader Rachel Yamson ('25 Psychology major) has been working on a complementary digital exhibition using archival materials and conducting interviews on the evolution and practices around Black hair at the CoW. 1. Why do I need to moisturize my hair if it is synthetic?
Moisturizing will minimize breakage to the hair; although every time you remove braids there will be a process of removal of dead hair. Moisturizing the hair prior to manipulating the hair with the tool will make the hair more malleable, thus making the braids brush out with more ease and minimize tangling.
2. How many braids can I take down at once?
The amount of braids depends on the size of the braids. The Original UnBraider can brush up to 8 micro and small braids. For best results, brushing out 3-4 medium and large braids is recommended.
3, Will it work on natural hair?
The Original UnBraider works on both natural hair, synthetic extensions, and human hair extensions.
