Citation Guidelines

Citing AI Generated Work

Students:
As with any assignment, always verify with your professor that AI-use is acceptable and to what extent you are allowed to use it. Be sure to also thoroughly check any information produced by an AI. Fact checking methods like lateral reading make this quick and easy to do.

Instructors:
Consider including an AI-use policy in your syllabus or individual assignments. To what extent do you consider using AI acceptable in student work? At what point do you consider it plagiarism? You can find more resources on this in the AI and Course Planning section of this LibGuide.

Like all things AI, these guidelines are developing and changing, so check back regularly.

APA Guidelines

How to cite ChatGPT (from the APA Style Blog)

Generally, results from generative AIs like ChatGPT are cited as personal communications. It is also recommended that you keep a transcript of the output for your bibliography.

Using generative AIs for your research (such as by analyzing data or creating an image) should also be mentioned in your "methods" section and cited using the suggestions above.

MLA Guidelines

MLA suggests here that you should cite a generative AI tool,  "whenever you paraphrase, quote, or incorporate into your own work any content (whether text, image, data, or other) that was created by it."

This article from MLA gives examples of how to cite generative AI for the following circumstances:

  • Paraphrasing text from AI output

  • Quoting text from AI output

  • Citing visual works created by AI

  • Quoting creative textual works completely created by AI

Chicago/Turabian Guidelines

The Chicago Manual of Style does not recommend creating a full bibliographic citation for generative AI. Rather, they recommend merely referencing it narratively within the narrative text of the paper.

However, if you are required to provide a citation:

  • Notes style: do not include a bibliographic citation in your references. Include a shortened citation in your footnote or endnote (recommendations here).

  • Author-date style: do not include a bibliographic citation in your references. Any additional information not included in the narrative text of your paper (the generative AI used, the date you used it, etc.) should be included in a parenthetical citation.
