Ethical questions with AI

AI and its use in and outside of the classroom present many ethical questions. While entire courses have been taught on these questions, we encourage you to have these discussions with your students and colleagues when considering AI use:

  • If generative AI is creating output based on existing content, where is that content coming from? How was that content obtained? Did the original creators consent to its use in this way?

  • Is "artificial intelligence" a misnomer? Whose intelligence is actually on display with these programs and their outputs?

  • While many of the capabilities of generative AI are impressive, it is not "just math." It is created by humans and all humans have biases, prejudices, and blind spots. Therefore, who creates these tools? What kind of biases, prejudices, or blind spots are present in them?

  • There is much alarm over AI "taking over jobs." Is this true? How are the perceived capabilities of AI misused for profit?

  • Can AI amplify misinformation? Can it be used to spread it quickly? What kind of safeguards can we build around this?
