An independent Department of Education was established in 1867, but in 1869 it was made an office within the Interior Department (originally known as the Bureau of Education, later the Office of Education). The Office was later transferred to the Federal Security Agency in 1939. The annual report of the Commissioner of Education began in 1868 and became part of the Annual Reports, Secretary of the Interior (I 1.1:) with the Bureau's incorporation into the Interior Department.
