U.S. Congressional Serial Set Finding List: Annual Reports, Pension Bureau (I 24.1:)

Pensions were originally handled by the Department of War as early as 1792, with some pensions also being paid from the Department of the Navy from 1832 onward. In 1833, the office of a Commissioner of Pensions was created under the Secretary of War, and in 1840, the matters relating to pensions that had been handled by the Navy were transferred to the War Department. When the Department of the Interior was established in 1849, the office of the Commissioner of Pensions was transferred to that department. In 1890, the office's name changed to Pension Bureau, and it remained under the Interior Department until 1930, when it was consolidated with the Veterans' Bureau to become the Veterans' Administration. The annual reports for the Pension Bureau from 1826 to 1848 were included in the Annual Reports, Secretary of War (W 1.1:) and apparently not published separately. Once the bureau moved to the Interior Department, the annual reports were produced separately and also included in the Annual Reports, Secretary of the Interior (I 1.1:).
