U.S. Congressional Serial Set Finding List: Annual Reports of the Attorney-General of the United States (J 1.1:)

Although the office of Attorney-General was established in 1789, it was not until 1870 that a Department of Justice was established with the Attorney-General as its head. This new executive department gathered together in one place all the legal advisers then attached to other departments, as well as the district attorneys, marshals, and other court-related offices. The Annual Reports of the Attorney-General (later, Reports of the Justice Department) began publication in 1870 with a report for the second half of that year, and continued with full-year reports from then on.
