U.S. Congressional Serial Set Finding List: Annual Reports of the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (T 11.1: and C 4.1:)

An act passed in 1807 provided for the "systematic survey of coasts of the United States," but it was not until 1816 that the Survey of the Coast was established within the Department of the Treasury. The Survey operated for two years before Congress repealed the 1807 provisions, and between 1818 and 1832 the Navy Department carried out smaller, detached surveys of selected areas. The 3rd and 4th annual reports of the Coast Survey therefore appeared as part of the Annual Report of the Department of the Navy (N 1.1:). By 1836, the functions of the Coast Survey were returned to the Treasury Department, where the name was changed to Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1878. In 1903, the Survey was transferred yet again, this time to the Commerce and Labor Department (later simply the Commerce Department), where it remained until 1965 and its incorporation into the Environmental Science Services Administration.
