U.S. Congressional Serial Set Finding List: Annual Reports, Commissioner of the General Land Office (I 21.1:)

After the Department of the Treasury was created in 1789, a 1796 law provided for the survey of lands belonging to the United States as well as for the granting of patents for those lands. Land offices established in 1800 and 1804 eventually gave way to the General Land Office, established as a part of the Treasury Department in 1812. When the Interior Department was established in 1849, the General Land Office was transferred to that executive department and remains there today. The annual reports from the Commissioner of the General Land Office first appeared in 1817, and until 1848 these reports were published as part of the Annual Reports, Secretary of the Treasury (T 1.1:). From 1849 on, these annual reports appeared as part of the Annual Reports, Secretary of the Interior (I 1.1:) as well as in a separate bureau edition. (Andriot 486, Checklist 504)
