U.S. Congressional Serial Set Finding List: Annual Reports, Secretary of War (W 1.1:)

The War Department was established in 1789, the second executive department to be created by Congress. Various reports made by the Secretary of War from 1789 to 1837 are included in the American State Papers, under Military Affairs (serial nos.16-22). Beginning in 1823, the Secretary's annual reports appeared in the Congressional Serial Set. Eventually the Secretary's report expanded to include annual reports from other offices within the War Department. With the 1867 annual report, the Annual Report of the Chief of Engineers (W 7.1/1:) was published as a separate volume of the Secretary's annual report. In 1872, the Annual Report of the Chief of Ordnance (W 34.1/1:) was similarly included, and in 1875 the Annual Report of the Chief Signal Officer (W 42.1:) also became part of the Secretary's report.
