The Documents Office within the Government Printing Office was created by law in 1895. Many of the early documents published by this office offered finding lists or indexes to government publications. The Document Catalogue provided a comprehensive index to documents issued by the Congress and by all the departments of the federal government, beginning in 1893. This catalogue became the precursor to the present-day Monthly Catalog. (Andriot 368, Checklist 417)
