The United States Maritime Commission was established in 1936 to succeed the Shipping Board and the Merchant Fleet Corporation. In 1950 the Commission was itself abolished, and its functions were transferred to the new Maritime Administration under the Department of Commerce. The Administration was then transferred to the Department of Transportation in 1981. The annual reports began publication with a report for 1936 and 1937 together, then were printed for each year thereafter. (NOTE: This series should not be confused with the Annual Reports, Federal Maritime Commission; this independent commission was established in 1961.)
