U.S. Congressional Serial Set Finding List: Diplomatic Correspondence / Foreign Relations of the United States (S 1.1:)

Established in 1789, the Department of State is the oldest executive department of the federal government. While the Secretary of State is the only cabinet officer not required to publish an annual report on the business of the Department, the Department has published on a regular basis (formerly annually but now less frequently on account of the broader scope) its diplomatic correspondence for the year. The earliest volumes, issued in tandem with the annual message of the President, generally summarized the state of relations with foreign countries, but this report in time grew to include diplomatic letters and occasional treaties. The title of this annual report changed from Diplomatic Correspondence to Papers Relating to Foreign Relations to its current title of Foreign Relations of the United States. The volumes listed here date back to 1818, incorporating those reports on diplomatic correspondence that were added to the President's message before this series took on a life of its own.
